Textile and apparel sector occupies a major place in the Indian economy; being the major contributor to the economy, next to agriculture, in terms of being foreign exchange earnings, employment to local labour, big share in the Indian exports. This sector is also diversified with a large number of segments ranging from products of traditional handloom, handicrafts, wool and silk products.
The domestic textile and apparel market was estimated at US$ 75 billion in 2020-21. While the exports were about US$ 28 billion showing decrease in textiles and apparels exports of US$ 33.5 billion in 2019-20, due to Covid. India's exports of textiles and apparels are expected to grow to US$ 65 billion by 2025-26. About 27% of the foreign exchange earnings pertain to export of textiles and apparels only. This sector contributes about 14% to the industrial production and 3% to ourGDP.The Textile and Garment sector is expected to reach about US $ 200 bn by 2025-26 from present US $ 103 bn.
The Textile and garments will be a focus sector for the Chamber, with Director General having a lot of diversified experience in holding exhibitions, trade fairs and other business promotion events in different countries. He has organized participation of Indian trade delegations in local and international business.
